The AIChE ChemE Car Competition

Sponsored by AIChE and presented by the Student Chapters Committee, the Chem-E-Car Competition is a bi-annual event which tests the rigor, teamwork, and minds of individual university AIChE chapters. The goals of the competition are to design, present, and implement a chemically-powered car. The ‘Chem-E-Car’ must be able to travel a variable distance and support a variable weight. University teams are awarded prizes for a poster presentation, overall safety, and car methodology and performance.

This past year the Rutgers ChemE Car team competed at the Penn State AIChE Mid-Atlantic Regional Student Conference in which the team placed fourth overall among the fifteen schools participating. Rutgers constructed a car that was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and used an iodine clock reaction coupled with a photo-resistor as its stopping mechanism.

The hydrogen was housed in a balloon to limit the potential hazards of using a metal cylinder. The iodine clock, however, is contained inside the frame of the car in effort to minimize the amount of ambient light that would disrupt the circuit.

Competing in the 2011 Annual Student Conference in Minneapolis, MN on October 2011, concluded a successful year for Rutgers ChemE Car. The team looks forward to the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference at Stevens Institute of Technology as it looks to place in the national conference for a second consecutive year.
